Ancient China had a rich diversity of myths from many traditions and peoples. Enough survives to show us a colourful and imaginative tapestry for the explanation of life's origins and mysteries, the foundations and falls of dynasties, immortals, deities, battles of gods, weird lands and strange folks, and many other supernatural and wonderful accounts, often hinting at vaster mythological backgrounds.
The present selection aims to suggest how vivid the myths were, by such means as venturing translations of many names. The generative potential of China's age-old myths continues into modern times, perhaps most notably in the realm of visual art.
